Well, I got my insurance renewal information for my dental/health/life insurance and have really been stalling on filling it out. It went up…A LOT! I have been wrestling with the idea of keeping it-not keeping it and it comes down to one thing-MONEY. I can’t afford it. So as of January 1st, I will be joining the millions of Americans without health insurance. When your health insurance premiums are half your monthly income-you can’t do it. I am gonna keep the life insurance for under $2 a week because it is worth it. Gosh-imagine if we file BK and something happens to me-my husband would be screwed! We have no savings, no nothing. He barely has work now. I worry about him and my girls and I want them to have something if anything should happen to me. I don’t know, I think about that kind of stuff. I know-most people don’t until it is too late.
Insurance in this country is a huge problem and something seriously needs to be done about it. Luckily, most states including mine have programs for children so that they all can have access to affordable insurance. It is we the adults who have a very hard time getting insured. I can only hope that while my husband and I are uninsured-we don’t have any problems!

I had the exact experience today. I had to call to see if I could get a lower premium. Get this, I could go from a $750 ded. for $187 up to a (are you sitting down?) $2000 ded. for $169. Isn’t that crazy? Almost triple the deductible and only save that little bit in premium. Some one today mentioned to me “catastrophic insurance”. i am giong to look into that.
Only an $18 difference for going up that high of a deductible? What a joke! Thant is a huge difference in deductibles!
I am curious about the Catastrophic insurance. I am going to look into that one too. My thing is-these insurance companies have sooo many loopholes to protect themselves-what do they actually consider a catastrophe? We know what we would consider a catastrophe…
Good luck-hopefully things will change soon-I have my fingers crossed.
Managed Choice Open Access and PPO Value 5000. Do a search for that. It, for me , is only $113 per month. And it is like a catastrophic plan, but it allows for 6 drs appts per year and also, no cost for your annual pap and mammogram. I am very impressed with it. Please e-mail me if you have any questions about it. I talked to the rep today for 30 minutes.! Drove her insane
Hey! Thanks for that info! I am all over it!
I just ran into your blog today and want to say good luck to you and your family as you navigate the credit minefield.
I’m wondering if your BK attorney has talked to you about the possibility of changes in the bankruptcy law? The Bush Admin has been totally opposed to modifying the “reforms” that were written into law in 2005 by the credit card companies, but the new admin and Dem congress seem very likely to review that. People are pretty unhappy about the fact that normal people are getting screwed to the wall by companies that have gambled our pensions, mortgages and 401Ks at 40 to 1 leverage and lost and are now expecting average people to bail them out.
It may mean that you have to hold out a few more months to see which way the wind is blowing in the legislature, but it could potentially save you thousands if means tests are done away with.
You might want to check out http://www.creditslips.org which is run by bankruptcy law professors including Elizabeth Warren who is now in charge of the bailout oversight committee. They are very much on top of BK legislative changes.
Again, good luck to you.
Thanks for the info Cathy. I will be reading all about it and I am checking out the site now.
When we met with our attorney-it was back in January. The economy was bad then but not like it is now. I have wondered about changes that will be coming next year and I really need to talk to him about it. He didn’t start our file until March when we put our deposit down and we have been paying him and the court fees off ever since. This though has me wondering and I definitely need to talk to him about it. Thanks again!
