I hope everyone had a Happy 4th of July. Honestly, ours was…well, uneventful. It ended up being just me and my youngest daughter and both of us were too disappointed to really enjoy anything. To make a really long story short-even though my husband was scheduled to work last night, he was not going in until late. It would give us time to all watch the awesome fireworks display from our new apartment and spend some quality family time together. We’ve only been counting the days for this awesome night since we moved in because we were told the view here was thee best!
Well, some brain at his company decided to do some budget cuts and lay off the guy that was suppose to work. Poor guy gets fired on a holiday not for bad performance or because he did something wrong but because he was still in his probationary period and the company decided to get rid of him now-I am guessing so he wont qualify for unemployment benefits.
If you read on here regularly, you know we have no problems working holidays, overtime, weekends…100 hours a week-whatever it takes. Heck I worked yesterday during the day so someone could go out of town for the holiday. Holiday pay and overtime money is great. What really pissed me off though was that nobody gave my husband the courtesy of a choice to work it or not or even some notice. Nobody stopped to think if maybe he had plans-he does have a family and they know this. Anywhere I have ever worked, if you were scheduled to work a holiday and wanted it off-you could request it off or work it out with a coworker to cover if you did not want to work it. Especially people with family or kids-you know? He was just basically forced to come in.
When he spoke to the office manager yesterday, the office manager told him it was either my husband getting fired or the other guy and by my husband working 4th of July-that saved his job! Whatever…
My husband then inquired about his health benefits he was suppose to receive after his probationary period was up. He waited 90 days but was told that this company’s probationary period was 120 days. He was told he will not be getting health benefits and really never was. The guy who hired him that has been with the company for years just up and quit (he was given no reason why) and he made a lot of promises, including health insurance that just aren’t going to be kept. Nice.
All this seems a little unethical and a little slimy but as the economy keeps going the way it is going-it will keep going on. You see, my husband can just get pissed and quit and they will just get another sucker in there that has been looking for a job for a long time, make some promises, pay him a low but better than nothing wage and the cycle will continue. Why? Because everyone needs a job out there and this is better than nothing for now. In a good economy-people wont take this crap and move on to the next job. As we all know, there aren’t too many next jobs out there. You gotta take what you can get now.
So the verdict-my husband is gonna stay for the pay only until they can’t pay him anymore, a layoff is imminent, or his work picks up dramatically where he could just quit. We will keep socking away his paycheck to pad our savings while he continues to try and get business for his work during the day. It is actually picking up steadily but not enough to live off of yet.
Surprisingly things at work are going great for me. I am very busy and my boss and I have in some odd way-been getting along well. It’s amazing the crap you gotta put up with in life sometimes but I know we all gotta do it.

My 4th was quiet but that was fine with me.
You are right about all you have posted. But companies get away with crap right now because of the economy and job losses. And (only my feeling) it is not getting better – only worse!!
So for now you have to do what you have to do – and I mean “all of us” in this situation. There are no easy answers but you already know that. At least you understand and realize and have the maturity to think things through!!
Our country is in a real mess right now and it will take years before things improve! Sad but that is how I see it!!
So on a lighter note, my bankruptcy is taking longer than I had hoped for since I am taking my lawyer’s advice and not taking the money out of my IRA. But now I agree with her and am doing again “what I have to do”~~ LOL
And smiling while I do it!!!!!
Hey Lois,
Sorry for the late response-I have been without my personal computer for a few days. It finally took a dive so I am on borrowed time here with the kids computer (lol).
This country is in a huge mess-you got that right! I am very sad to see what is going on. Pretty sad too that even our Police and Fire Departments here are doing major cuts. No job is safe any more. We just gotta do what we gotta do and take a little crap along the way—for now anyway.
Gosh, I hate to to hear your BK has to take longer than expected. I hope the collection efforts haven’t gotten too out of hand yet. The sooner you file-the sooner it will all be over with.
The one good thing I learned when we were struggling to get the money to file, is that I never want to be in debt…AGAIN. All the creditor calls and letters and threats did bother me at the time and I will never be in that position again. So I guess waiting could help a little. It will be a reminder of where you don’t want to be—ever again.
Thanks again as usual. So glad you got the computer issue straighted out. Yes today it is a necessity!! lol
No the collection calls are not bad – mostly because I have Magic Jack and they do not have that number.
Well taking longer is just because I need to get the cash together instead of taking it out of my IRA. So this month and next month and I should be there!!
Going to Jersey next month for my grandsons (twins) 3rd birthday. My son sent me a ticket so….. either before I leave or definitely after I get back I will be able to have the paperwork filled out and on my way!!
Surprising to say this, but……….. I really am at ease with it all! LOL
Glad things are working out for you and your family!!!!
